Youth Active classes kicks off at LeisureFit Booragoon

The City of Melville’s LeisureFit Booragoon is kicking off a new group exercise program for youth aged 12 to 16 on Monday, 18 July 2016, which will aim to boost physical activity among teenagers and ensure their bodies and minds are fit and healthy.

Youth Active is a 45 minute class jam packed with cardio and strengthening exercises that will boost fitness, athleticism and functional movement.

City of Melville Mayor Russel Aubrey said the Youth Active class was developed as a result of a community-wide need for exercise options for the time poor, and a gap in the current market for youth fitness activities.

“Research tells us that teens need at least 60 minutes of activity every day to lower their risk of high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, type two diabetes and obesity, however only one in ten young people actually achieve this,” said Mayor Aubrey.

“We know that young people have lots going on in their lives, and can find it hard to be active unless they have active hobbies or extracurricular activities such as dance or sport.

“However, not all young people are keen on physical activity, so getting active with a friend or in a group situation in a non-competitive, social environment may encourage them to just have a go and have fun.”

  • Being active every day helps teens:
  • improve overall health and fitness
  • develop strong muscles, bones and good posture
  • maintain a healthy weight
  • increase self confidence
  • improve concentration and memory
  • reduce stress
  • make and keep friendships
  • improve sleep

Youth Active will run weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4.00pm to 4.45pm at LeisureFit Booragoon, please report to reception first. Please note that Parent/Legal Guardian consent is required prior to attending your first class.
