Outstanding Achievement award for Melville’s Garage Sale Trail
Following on from Melville’s success as the best performing Local Government in the State and fifth in Australia for its participation in the 2016 Garage Sale Trail, the City has been awarded the Outstanding Achievement award in the national Garage Sale Trail Awards for excellence.
Now in its 6th year, the Garage Sale Trail, which took place on Saturday, 22 October 2016, is a waste education initiative that engages communities to rethink what they waste through the simple act of buying and selling at a garage sale. With increasing council engagement and growing community support 2016 exceeded all previous records with 15,340 garage sales and stalls registered across Australia, representing over two million items listed for reuse at an approximate value of $13.9 million.
City of Melville Deputy Mayor Rebecca Aubrey said it was wonderful for a Western Australian local government to be recognised at a national level for its outstanding communications and marketing campaign.
“The efforts of the City’s team this year to motivate the community to participate, resulted in an exceptional number of Melville residents and community groups coming together and getting involved in the 2016 Garage Sale Trail,” said Deputy Mayor Aubrey.
“This also means that as a community we are supporting and promoting the wider messages of sustainability, recycling and reuse. Congratulations to everyone who was involved,” said Deputy Mayor Aubrey.
Garage Sale Trail Co-Founder Andrew Valder said it was inspiring to see how councils continue to embrace the program in new and innovative ways and how communities in both metropolitan and regional Australia have responded on such a massive scale.
Supported by more than 30 councils in Western Australia alone, as well as State Government partners including the Waste Authority of WA, the Garage Sale Trail is not only the fastest-growing sustainability and reuse event in the State but also Australia.
