Outdoor Fitness Classes a Hit

For the second year running, the City’s free Active in the Park outdoor fitness classes have again been a huge success with over 3000 participants attending the 16/17 season and featuring in The Urban List’s top ten outdoor fitness classes in Perth.

Originally launched as  the Healthy Melville initiative in November 2015, two free fitness classes were offered with their popularity leading to a further two classes being added in January 2016, followed by the addition of a fifth class in October 2016 to meet the needs of all community members.

City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said the Active in the Park initiative supported the community’s aspiration to lead a healthy and active lifestyle, evident by the uptake and high attendance of the free classes.

“In planning the fitness classes, the Healthy Melville team have considered the needs of all members of our community and designed them for all ages and abilities, ranging from Tunes for Tots aimed at parents and toddlers, to Active Light for seniors and those wanting a lighter workout,”

“This season’s new Tunes for Tots class proved an instant hit, attracting mums, dads and grandparents attending with their little ones, with many reporting an increase in their child’s confidence and social skills since joining the class,”

“Aimed at school-aged children Play-Fit also proved popular, encouraging children to spend more time outdoors and less time in front of screens, which studies are showing is a leading cause of several health issues affecting our young ones, from obesity to short-sightedness,”

“The Heathy Melville team were delighted the classes Active in the Park was selected by The Urban List as one of the top ten outdoor fitness classes in Perth and are very grateful to St John of God Murdoch and Melville Holden, for their support as the major sponsors and making Active in the Park possible,” Mayor Aubrey said.

Active in the Park classes include Functional Fitness, Yoga, Tunes for Tots, Play-Fit for Kids and Active Light classes, held in the City’s parks and led by professional fitness trainers from the City’s LeisureFit centres.

The Spring/Summer timetable concludes at the end of March due to weather and light conditions, however PlayFit and Active Light classes will resume in the first week of May and all other classes will return in October 2017. For more information visit www.melvillecity.com.au/active
