Nominate Your Friendly Neighbour – Submissions open now

As part of celebrations for Neighbour Day the City of Melville is asking the community to nominate a great neighbour to go in the running to win one of eight $100 Garden City vouchers and be recognised as a friendly neighbour.

Celebrated Australia wide on the last Sunday in March (26 March 2017), Neighbour Day is aimed at building relationships and strengthening communities by getting to know and appreciating the people who live around us.

City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said with this year’s Neighbourhood Day theme about the importance of social connection for the elderly, it highlights the need for friendly neighbourhoods and getting to know our seniors and older community members.

“Social connection also makes us feel better as it helps prevent loneliness, isolation and depression. Neighbour Day brings together like-minded people, resources, and organisations to grow stronger, well connected communities.”

“Establishing and maintaining good relationships with our neighbours has many benefits − the community is friendlier, the neighbourhood is safer and becomes a more relaxed and comfortable place to live, especially for the elderly and vulnerable” he said.

“We are asking residents to nominate their friendly neighbours for their efforts – so tell us why they are great!

“Last year’s winner Emma Charlton was nominated for looking after her neighbours’ children, houses and pets, hosting fundraising and Australia Day events and helping elderly neighbours.”

Nominations for the Friendly Neighbour Awards are now open and close midnight Sunday, 12 March 2017, apply online at www.melvillecity.com.au/friendlyneighbours, or call 1300 635 845 | 9364 0666 to nominate your neighbour over the phone.
