Australia Day Begins with Community Breakfast and Awards

The City of Melville’s annual Australia Day Awards and Citizenship ceremony, and community breakfast, supported by the Lions Club Bull Creek, is the perfect way to start your Australia day.

City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said the iconic, family-friendly Australia Day community event, held at John Creany Reserve in Bull Creek, attracted nearly 700 people in 2016.

“I would love to see an even bigger turn out to the Australia Day breakfast, award and citizenship ceremony this year, bring a picnic rug or fold up chairs, a gold coin donation and enjoy a barbeque breakfast,” Mayor Aubrey said.

“On this day we will welcome our newest Australian Citizens, acknowledge our outstanding citizens and residents, and come together as one community celebrating life in Australia.

“The awards ceremony, including the Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Group of the Year awards, recognise those in our community that set a wonderful example and display the true Australian spirit.”

This year’s award recipients were nominated because they had significantly contributed to the local community during 2016, or have carried out extraordinary service to the local community over a number of years. Award recipients were nominated by peers, friends, colleagues and family.

The Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony will be held on Thursday, 26 January 2017 from 8.30am at John Creaney Reserve, corner Parry Avenue and Benningfield Road, Bull Creek. The Lions Club Bull Creek breakfast is available for a gold coin donation.

Throughout the year, Citizenship ceremonies are held at the City of Melville Civic Centre. Officiated by His Worship the Mayor, the certificates are presented to the new Australian citizens and become legal proof of Australian citizenship.
