Costume, Customs and Culture
Enjoy the hospitality of Guild House, view a display of Chinese minority costumes, and hear how the embroidered motifs and designs evolved.
This event, part of the Australian Heritage Festival (18 April - 20 May) held in conjunction with the National Trust of WA, has the theme My Culture, My Story to celebrate the diversity of cultures that have shaped our shared heritage.
Gail Hawes’ personal collection of Chinese minority costumes and accessories will be on display for this day only. Gail has travelled extensively through China over many years and is happy to share her broad knowledge of costume, customs and culture as shown through the design and symbolism displayed in the embroidery, particularly of the Miao people, through an illustrated talk.
This will also be one of the few occasions this year that the Textile Collection Room will be open for viewing the embroidery and lace.
