Melville City Centre

Planning the future of the Garden City Shopping Centre, Booragoon and surrounding areas.

Melville City Centre Structure Plan

The Melville City Centre Structure Plan guides the future redevelopment of the area.

The Plan provides for the activity centre to transition over time from a suburban shopping centre to a mixed use city centre. The changes would be driven by the redevelopment of the Garden City Shopping Centre, including vibrant new high street precinct with cafes, restaurants and shops, new community facilities and new residential development.

Local Planning Strategy

A key objective of the City’s Local Planning Strategy is to concentrate population growth and development in “activity centres” and along transport corridors. This strategy limits the need to change suburban residential areas. The Melville City Centre is the main activity centre and community hub in the City of Melville.

The Plan provides a vision for the future and town planning rules to align with this vision. It was informed by community feedback and relevant town planning requirements.

Garden City Shopping Centre Redevelopment

The Garden City Shopping Centre Redevelopment Plans were approved on 18 December 2015.

The approval includes a range of conditions to guide the expansion of the shopping centre and associated works. It is expected that the shopping centre owners – AMP Capital Investors – may begin works in 2017.
